Eureka! Ready Built Pumps!
After some engineering problems with my two previous ideas, I've decided to look around for pumps that could suit our purposes.
Note: These pumps are self priming
Attention!: these pumps are untested for our high pressure purposes.
This first one is from ACE Hardware called William H. Harvey 093606 Pump Kit Hand Crank
It has a plastic construction and and a pistol grip. It moves 4 qts. a min.
Advantages: Lightweight, can be adjusted for right/left-handed persons
Disadvantages: Handle is removable , Site says nothing about durability or ability to handle pressure. it's $40.00+
Selling Point: Its got a PISTOL GRIP!!!!!!! (sorry, i can be such a kid)
Another thing I came across in my search was something called Drill Powered Pumps.
Wayne WDP21S "Chuckmaster" Drill Powered Pump
This little guy has the following stats:
Garden hose thread
360 GPM max.
Up tp 10 head
Peggable poly bag with header card
Now i'm not sure what the last two mean but garden hose threads are something that can be dealt with but 360 gal Per min? That pretty impressive. It's small so that nice. But I'm not sure how to Connect a handle to that thing. Perhaps someone with better hardware skills than I can figure this out. This one is cheap at $6.25. Worth a try.
The last pump I'll be showing you is another Drill Power Pump,
Jabsco 17215-0000 Drill Pump Kit
Cheaper than the Ace Hand Crank Pump but much more expensive than it's neighbor, the Wayne Pump.
This one got very good reviews on amazon compared to the wayne pump and has hose couplings for easy water reservoir attachment. From what i can see in customer reviews this guy has good durability and good output. It may be our best candidate. It shares one problem with the wayne pump. How to attach a handle....
NOTE: If you do try the two Drill powered pumps with a drill, i insist that it be done in experimentation only and not for play, electrocution is not fun. Just Funny to watch.
If someone does have a way to attach a handle to the drill powered pumps. i would like to hear about it.
If you do try these pumps out I would to hear about that too.
Basically anything you have to say, i appreciate it hahahaha!

Do you realize how expensive those are? That would really push up the price of a homemade.

The second one costs $6.25

Plus lots shipping. Also, the pump volume will be dispicable, especially because it is made to spin fast.
Just make a pump.

Those pumps are designed to move fluid in low pressure situations. The best pumps are linear, traditional style. If you don't want to build your own, just use a bicycle pump!

well, it's more about innovation than not wanting to build. I would defintely build if i had money for parts.

Why design something worse than what you can achieve? Somebody could make a flintlock pistol for home defense, and how many people do you think would buy it if they could get a semi-auto handgun for cheaper?

I don't understand. You can build your own water pump with 1/2" PVC, a wooden dowel, a rubber o-ring, and some electrical tape. The total cost of parts would be much less than the cheapest pump that you linked to and you can build it in 2 minutes.Fatalness wrote:well, it's more about innovation than not wanting to build. I put an anogy of the exact same statement, but yes, there is no reason for these.

I think I left out some things that led to a misunderstanding.
This article is not about cost, it's finding things that can possibly help further the research.
But I'm only suggesting things. If someone can make it work, then thats great.

Those need heavy modding to work for water and even then I've heard that water can wear out the seals which were designed only for air.wetmonkey442 wrote:Those pumps are designed to move fluid in low pressure situations. Some were water pumps. Still, why reasearch something that is obselete?

Re: Eureka! Ready Built Pumps!
I have difficulties seeing how a seal made to handle air won't handle water, unless it's a paper sealing surface which is unlikely given the pressures that bike pumps operate at... The newer ones use silicone-based lubricant for the o-rings, so that has to go or the water may wash it off with time... But everything else is okay with water exposure.

Re: Eureka! Ready Built Pumps!
They often don't seal when you use water. Stick some water in a spring nerf gun that has a "perfect" seal and see if you don't get water pouring from the casing behind the plunger head. Air is much more forgiving than water. A pump can move air without having a particularly great seal. Water is also just a more difficult material to move...the pump will take stress, especially the faster you pump. At higher speed, it's like slamming the seal against a solid vs a gas.

Re: Eureka! Ready Built Pumps!
The Nerf gun is hardly a fair comparison. The bike pump needs to be able to reliably hold upwards of 80psi to be worth much of anything, and Nerf guns are not known for their great seals... Though I suppose a cheaper bike pump wouldn't work well for water, I'll admit. I have a hard time buying bike supplies at walmart with how much I used to ride.
