Oooh...maybe I shouldn't have cut out the mesh then.

Well, I didn't really notice any differences in performance except for a slight power increase, but it was almost too small to tell. The mesh removal didn't really affect accuracy..

Well, it sounds like no harm was done when you removed the mesh. There should still be a slight performance increase because of the added velocity, but as long as the flow isn't twisting around before the nozzle, accuracy wouldn't really change much. It's just that it could change without the mesh there to straighten it out. I guess it depends on how much the mesh really is slowing the stream down. If it greatly slows it done, I'd say it would be highly beneficial to remove it. But if it's not, you better leave it.
