Well, the problem with the first one, especially the earlier versions, was that the OpenOffice.org guys hadn't exactly ironed out the finer details of .doc files. It's a proprietary file format, and knowing the monopolistic Microsoft, they're not going to give away how the .doc files work. Still, a few people have mentioned that .doc files created in Microsoft or OOo that are really complex (formatting-wise) aren't always read right, but 99.999999% of the time, it works. Earlier, people experienced quite a few problems, and like the WordPerfect users, they had to use .rtf (which no Word users actually bother using). If you like the display and layout of AbiWord, then be my guest; otherwise, I doubt they can come close to OOo.
