I wouldn't do this, and even if I did, I'd follow what soakernerd said. It's just not safe, and adding duct tape is going to hardly do anything.
It might allow an extra 10 psi and slow down the ripped pipe. That's all!

But if there was a lot of duct tape, wouldn't it catch all the shrapnal or at least slow it down so that it's harmless?
How could the pressure make it explode anyway? It's just 80 psi. Does the pressure somehow get higher or something?

when water is impacted by a force, surface tension makes it like a wall. this is why you can feel the impact when you jump into the water. also, since the air is in motion, there is greater pressure than if it was just held in a tank.
anyway, tying a rope to the valve isn't that hard, and it could keep you from getting hurt.

I would definately take soakernerd's advice at the very least. At the most, I would probably stick to using pressurised water in my water guns, and save air for the nerf/marshmallow guns.
