Force quickly realised the large number of people standing outside the base were not Tempests. Spotting Toaster leading five of them in, he and Sophie ran over.

"Hey, what's going on here?" Force asked.

"We're just about to find out," replied Toaster.

Duxburian realized that there were too many Tempests to take on alone. Since the airports were controled by Tempests, he arranged to meet the Militia at the marina near 4. He welcomed his 11 fellow militia members plus 5 more friends from further North.

They then rented 4 jeeps and drove off toward the nearest sign of the enemy, an outpost near the edge of the central forest. The group parked the jeeps on the side of the road and stealthfully entered the forest, 16 total WBL's in hand. The outpost was surrounded by a clearing and no guards were visible.

"Open fire!" Tempests from inside the outpost panicked as well-placed shot after shot sarted to take out the defensive turrets. A few ran out to challenge the Militia, but were thrown back by another round of expertly aimed WBL shots. Duxburian ordered a charge, and the Militia stormed the wooden wall, breaking through in several places. Not 10 minutes from the start of the battle, the Tempests trapped inside surrendered.

Duxburian questioned the Tempest commander, "Where is the main Tempest base on this island?"

The commander sneered, "It's actually over to the left about a half mile, but you'll never get in, it is too well guarded."

"We'll find a way, we always do."

"Our tanks will make sure you don't."

Duxburian groaned, "Oh great, tanks again." He smiled, "Heh, your tanks stand no chance against our superweapon. Don't believe me? Well, the unlucky Tempests guarding that base will find out what it is soon enough."

Duxburian then gestured for a few Militia members to take the prisoners down to the lower level. "They should get to know the Douchenator", he said, as laughter filled the room.

It was then that the Militia heard noise outside. Looking out the window, through the trees Duxburian could see a large group of people, 50 maybe, and a decent sized compound. He warned the others, "Weapons ready, I can't tell what side they are on, so we might have to fight again."

hold on: the Tempest said that the Sabre compound was theirs?

Toaster gestured for the new arrivals to sit down. When they were all in their chairs, Toaster sat at the head of the table, and Force sat on his right.
"Okay. Let's get one thing straight. You are not Tempests?" Toaster asked.
The oldest kid stood, and shaking his head replied, "No. We are not Tempests. We are-"
"I know, I know... Newbies that got flattened by the Tempest forces," Toaster interrupted.
"Yes. All we want is a place to rest for a while, and hopefully arrange a way off this island. Please, let us come inside!" enthused the kid.
Toaster calmed the young man with a downward gesture. "Sure. We'll let you come in. But you can only stay a little while. I doubt you can leave though. The Tempests have control of the airport, if not the harbour. I was lucky to get my boat out," Toaster said, offhandedly waving towards the Knuckleguard stowed in the back corner of the warehouse.
Force stood up, and looked at the kids. "We won't arm you, but we will protect you as long as you're here."
"That's all we ask," one of the younger newbies said.
"Ok. Go out and tell your group the provisions, then come inside," Toaster told the kids.
"I'll go inform the guards," Force volunteered as the five representatives filed out the front door.
"Good. I can't shake the feeling of impending doom, though..." Toaster trailed off.

Racer sat in his Hotel room.

He yawned.

"Wow. I didn't see the time. I didn't sleep a bit." he thought.

"Oh... My... Gosh...."

A text file on the stolen hard drive from the Tempests had uncovered the plan of what they were going to do, and how they were going to do it.

The file read:

"THE PLAN:

Build more powerful clones of the Sabre's vehicles, then use them to strike down the Milita.

EXECUTION:

Lead the Sabres to the base in 3, when they get there, the water missiles will detonate, and while they are out of their vehicles, steal them and take them away to the other base in 4.

We will make 6 clones of the vehicles. They will be assigned to a different town, eliminating all opponents who stand in our way."

"Hmm... This is interesting. I better encyrpt these files so only I can read them." Racer said to himself.

He quickly found his XP 75 and modded Flash Flood and set off to find Duxburian, trapped inside a base with the rest of the milita, he quickly ran inside and caught up with him and told him the plan.

Finally the plan emerges!

After hearing the details of the plan, Duxburian paused a moment to form a counter-plan. "Racer, go find the Sabres and warn them, only problem is that I have no clue where they are. Try spying on that huge compound that way, if it's not them then at least you might hear someone mention them."

He turned to the Militia. "We have to withdraw to the town of 2, take the marina, and then fortify the headland there. That way we will have boats if evacuation is necessary, we will have control of the harbor entrance, and some nice high ground. Pick up some sturdy supplies in 2, since these vehicles will be very powerful."

With that, Racer started down the path toward the compound, and the Militia got back in their jeeps and drove off to 2. Upon arrival they sighed in relief that there were no Tempests around. "Ha, I will make them pay for not seeing the strategic value of this small town!"

The Militia found the marina unguarded and selected the high bluff at the harbor entrance for their fort. Conveniently, the marina lay right below the bluff and was easily covered from that position. "Nice, we can blockade the harbor!" exclaimed Duxburian. That huge Tempest fleet at 1 is going nowhere fast."

The group then got to work building a massive fort with Duxburian directing the defenses. "We need to use the 'Defense in Depth' method, make 5 walls, each inner wall should be thicker and taller than the next one. A ditch with spikes goes between each wall. WBL's need to mounted at regular intervals on each wall and have to placed at different levels."

With the group now safely inside the base, Force went to see Toaster again. He explained about what they had found out.

"Now we just need to wait for Ed to return and we'll be ready to go." Force checked his watch. "Three o'clock. They've got five hours."

That's your cue Ed.

ok, clear something up for me: what did Force tell Toaster about? because I'm quite confused here, what with the myriad revelations taking place right now.

Pulling up in front of a garage in 3, Rico whistled. The garage door opened as if it was waiting for them.

"Heyyyyy, it's Rico. How you doing?" The mechanic which seemed to be supervising the operation on an unknown car drawled as they got out of the Trueno.

"Ay Amos mi amigo. Nice ta see ya!" They exchanged hi-fives.

"Yeah, swell." The mech named Amos started checking out the Trueno. "Eight-six. Pretty XPBackfire-esquepy stock, but you've done a few mod jobs, huh?" he said, yanking off his oil-stained gloves and letting his hands trail over the bodywork.

"Yes, but it's mostly on the chassis. Rico said you could bolt on some NOS for me."

"Whazzat?! Rico, ya dumbass, it's nitrous oxide, not NOS!"

Rico scowled. "'S a bleedin' mouthful, and NOS sounds cooler!"

"Yeah, yeah. Well holmes, I can bolt-on a dry system on a 4-pot, 2 hours no problem. Your price?..."

-----------------------------------------

"That kit was so fricking expensive," Ed said, as Rico pulled out of the garage with the shop's demo car. The badge on the vehicle's grille said Charger R/T, but Ed didn't know of any car with that name.

"Be worth it, man. It's real kickass." Rico said as he shifted to 2nd with a rather loud clunk.

"What's this car, anyway?"

"Ya saw da badge, 's a '70s Dodge Charger. American Muscle."

"And?"

"'And?' Man, everyone wants this baby!"

"Ok, so what can she do?"

Rico faced him, grinning like the proverbial Ceshire Cat. "Ya really wanna know?"

"Either floor it or shut-" Ed was cut short by the sudden acceleration which pushed him back onto his seat.

"HAHA! V8 power, amigo, WOOO!"

"At least lemme put on my seatbelt, dang you!" The initial shock did nothing to reduce Ed's increasing nervousness.

"Ok, man, after this turn, it's straight as mah member all da way to 4! going to let loose then!"

Ed had barely managed to fasten the seatbelt when Rico negotiated the corner and finally got to the main road, straight as a ruler. A raw growl enemated from below the huge air scoop as the Charger leapt forward like an angry beast.

Accelerating strongly even at 2000 rpm! How much torque does this car have?

As Rico clunked to 4th, he fingered a small red button on the steering wheel labeled N2O...

-----------------------------------------

"Like da ride?"

Ed was breathing rather fast. "Rocket."

"Yeh, ol' Amos pulled out all da stops fer this one. Ah was there first time he took it down fer a drag. Left nearly everyone in the dust and was head-to-head with a Shelby Mustang." They pulled into a back alley with a dead end.

"Rico, is this some kind of joke?"

"Shaddap." He took out a hand phone and selected a number from the quickdial list. Moments later, the wall in front of them opened, revealing a large compound hidden by a rather thick tree canopy. The wall closed immeadiately as they went through it towards a security post.

"Halt! Rico and white-boy, get outta da car!" 2 dark-skinned guards started searching the Charger. Rifles were trained on Ed.

"Rico, who's this white-boy?"

"Chill, he's OK, man."

"Boss don't like white people. He going to kick our AquaSquirtz." The guards glanced at Ed doubtfully.

"He just wanna talk mano-a-mano with da Boss. And he ain't all white."

Finally, the guards let them park the Charger and escorted them into the building, their guns still aimed at Ed. Left, up some stairs, right, through a corridor, right into a lift that only had 2 buttons. Rico jabbed the upper button. The lift swiftly moved upwards, jerking to a stop at what felt to be the top level.

"Ay Boss! Mister Loner to see ya!"

At this, the guards recoiled.

"Chill, mi amigos, he's cool, he's cool!"

The guards didn't hang around to listen, and the lift had went down by the time Rico finished.

Stupid, what publicity can do for you...

A low voice (it sounded rather like Morpheus) echoed through the hall-like room.

"Don't mind them, Edward. Now if you and Rico would just come forward and we'll discuss your business..."

The Morpheus guy was facing a projected screen, typing away on a keyboard attached to his chair.

"Offer him a seat, Rico. Where are your manners?"

"Dosen't matter, I'll get-" Rico had already dragged 2 chairs towards them. As he got close, he muttered: "Da boss's gotta soft spot fer niceties. Best keep him happy."

With a small sigh, the heavyset man finished whatever he was working on and his chair twisted around to face Ed and Rico. "I understand that you've come here in pursuit of one of your teammate's older brother," he said, addressing Ed, who shrugged.

"Rick dragged me here. I've gotta look after him."

"You have gained quite a reputation within the ranks of the Tempest forces. I daresay you and your team are pretty much marked men."

"Old news."

A small smile of amusement crept into the man's serious face. "I have sent some of my agents to gather information on the Tempests. It serves the double purpose of training them for mercenary duties and for profit."

"So I'll have to buy the intel you've gathered." Ed frowned at the thought of forking out even more money, but the man waved dismissively, and continued:

"In normal circumstances, that would be the case. However, since you've helped one of my top mercenaries"-he glanced at Rico- "I am willing to give you a waiver on the cost, in exchange for your temporary services."

Ed looked blank. "What services?"

"He wants ya to fight for him, dumbass!" Rico piped in.

"If you agree to these terms, I'll give you the intel you need and some additional equipment."

"No other terms?"

One of the thick eyebrows went up. "What makes you think that?"

"I've heard of stuff being hidden in fine print."

That small grin again. "You have wits." He turned back to the projected screen and started bringing up windows. "No, there will be no other terms unless you want them."

Ed exhaled heavily. "OK. Tell me what I need to know."

Crashing through the undergrowth, Spinner stumbled along for several hours, hoping that either the sun would come out so he could get his bearings, or that he would find his way out of the wood.

He was getting extremely tired and hungry, but he kept on going, knowing that if he stopped it would likely be all over for him, thanks to the viciously cold East Island nights.

Dusk was just starting to fall when he reached out in front of him and touched cold stone instead of the wet wood he had been accustomed to. Looking up, he could make out a tall, castle-like structure.

Following the line of the wall, he cautiously felt his way along, until he found the corner of the building. Stepping out, he surveyed the area.

The familiar Tempest flag left no question as to the proprietors. The question was, how was he going to get inside, to food and warmth?

He then twigged. Nipping back inside the forest, he looked for an opening or window of some sort up the building, then selected a tree and climbed up towards it.

"Now's not the time to develop vertigo," he told himself through gritted teeth.

Toaster sat at his desk, peering down at a topographical map. He'd scribbled over it with the location of the wall perimeter, and was now marking the locations Force had described, namely the drainage pipe and the manhole they'd found. He cross-referenced it with a map of the town drainage plan, and corrected. Eyleascial walked into the room, carrying a roll of paper.
"Hey there. What's that?" asked Toaster.
"You know those plans you found with the Tempest hiding in the back room? This is a breakdown of the stats, or something like that. Monkey just said to give it to you," Eyleascial said.
Taking the roll, Toaster motioned for his friend to sit down. She obligingly took a seat, landing heavily. "You tired?" Toaster asked.
Nodding, Eyleascial leaned forward. "Yeah. It's been hard, you know. I'm not used to this kind of thing. It gets complicated. And it's not just the fighting..."
Catching her meaning, Toaster nodded and said, "I know. Things get complicated a lot, at least when I'm around... It shouldn't be, but it is."
"You're right. Why is it so hard to work out?" Eyleascial asked in an exasperated tone.
"Don't ask me. I'm a blundering idiot when it comes to this kind of thing. It's hard to work out for anyone, but I can't begin to fathom it," Toaster replied.
Getting up, Eyleascial said, "Yeah, well, I can't either. See ya later, Pip."
Grunting in reply, Toaster unrolled Monkey's breakdown. It stated the expected range, output, pressure, and hull damage statistics, and had a diagram to explain each. Toaster worked the ranges into his map, drawing a "safe distance" perimeter outside which the Armadillo could safely drop off Force's group. He added a few metres to that perimeter, just in case, and began to plan out the raid.

I was waiting for Ed to finish and get back so we can start the raid. If that hasn't happened by this weekend, then we'll have to start without him.
