Hey, I'm from NZ so have a similar problem to you with regards to shipping prices. Keep an eye on Australian ebay (or any other equivalent auction sites) using favourite searches, your best bet is someone from the US willing to send them internationally. There are always heaps of really expensive ones on ebay, but quite often there are reasonably priced 2500s, around $70USD (from memory)...Expect to pay a lot more for a 2000, and 60 - 80USD for shipping alone (based on the one time I estimated it, so I might be wrong there).

Failing that, you might be able to find a Water Warriors Vindicator/Pulse Master/Vanquisher/Orca in Australian stores, which are good modern soakers. When I was in Australia last year (Mooloolaba) I picked up a Super Soaker Flash Flood from a Kmart/Big W which is another good option so they may still be available too.

Good to have another person from this side of the world here!

Water Warriors Hydro Power (the rubber diaphragm system that the Vindicator, etc use) is Buzz Bee's way of getting round Hasbro's patents on cylindrical and spherical CPS.

It's not quite as good as CPS technology, but still a lot better than what Hasbro are making at the moment.

The Vindicator doesn't use a diaphragm, it uses a bulb shaped CPS chamber, sort of a cross between cylindrical and spherical, as seen here: http://forums.sscentral.org/attachments ... 1282463882 (Pic from forum member AROCK )

Several of the other Hydro Power blasters do use the diaphragm, which indeed tends to be less powerful (it's very challenging to engineer). But it seems that Hasbro's patents were found to be quite specific.
