I probably wouldn't spend much time in the chat room, but like Ben, if someone starts it, I may check it out.

What time zone is everyone in? I know Ben, Specter, and I are in EDT, and cantab is in GDT. Judging from the username, I'd say NYWriter is in EDT, too.

Oh no, it wasn't, but it definitely wasn't a link that was acceptable for posting there.

By the way, do you guys mind if I do it on the GameSurge server? I'm familiar with using and creating channels on that server.

GDT? Errr...no. GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) in winter, BST (British Summer Time) in summer. I think our changeover dates differ from the states too.

NYwRiter94, go ahead and start one if you know a thing or two about it. Don't call it SSC chat or anything like that as our staff won't be fully involved. Something like Soakertalk or something similar (it'd be your channel, so if you have a better idea go with it) would be fine and would attract those from outside SSC.

Alright, #soakertalk is up. Just sign onto Gamesurge(the network) and then join #soakertalk.

I guessed what the server was and it seems I am correct. The server is irc.gamesurge.net for those whose IRC clients don't have it included by default (XChat, what I use, doesn't).

I'll be online for a few hours this morning as btrettel.

Just posting what you need to do to get in.

1) Download an IRC client. I personally use mIRC: http://www.mirc.com/

2) OPTIONAL Register on Gamesurge: http://www.gamesurge.net/

3) Open up mIRC, click File, Select Server, then find Gamesurge

4) Then connect and, if you registered on Gamesurge, type this into the typing area: /authserv AUTH [usernamehere] [passwordhere]

5) Type the following into the typing area: /join #soakertalk

6) You're in!

Please let me know if I forgot something.

cantab: I wasn't sure, so I guessed based on how we change the name for US timezone. At any rate, most timezones switch to DST in March or April and switch back in October. (I once had the misfortune of trying to write code to determine when it happens.)

I joined as "tecro." I'm using Konversation since it was installed with the distro.

Joined. No surprises for guessing who's me.

I'm using Pidgin, because I can't be bothered to set up a 'proper' IRC client just for one channel.

Sorry about disappearing yesterday. I'll be online tonight at 8 PM EST (midnight GMT) as suggested by steelboot at iSoaker.net.

Let's look into starting a regular weekly chat time because I enjoy them.

I think that Saturday at midnight GMT is a good weekly chat time. NYwRiter94, Ben and cantab seem to be okay with that, as am I.

Just wanted to say, GMT does not take into account daylight savings. So that'd actually be 8:00 pm EDT...that might have led to some confusion yesterday.

i would try joining the chat, but mIRC.com isn't loading for me, and the ChatZilla addon for firefox can only connect to so many (13) select servers.

if only it was on Skype... i probably have to update that too, I haven't used skype in forever.

EDIT: I think i can get on mIRC.com now, i think my internet was screwed up because other sites weren't loading as well so I restarted my computer... I'll try it later.
(I'd still prefer Skype though as I know the interface better)

EDIT2: I might try ChatZilla again, i found the support page and how to connect to other networks

Specter and others, hit me up on Skype if you want to chat. I never figured out IRC at all, the whole concept of it seems incredibly arcane. Skype chats are much more modern and remain live even if no one in the room is online. Older versions work perfectly fine, I only use 2.6.
