Well in that case, something based on a tennis racquet or lax stick (basically, having said net inside a circular structure instead of between two poles/rods) would work better since only one hand would be needed to catch it. (it would only pop if the user is careless; you're supposed to let the balloon land gently instead of swinging at it like a tennis ball) It's still easier to dodge or block, but catching does give you a free balloon.

Yeah, I might try to use a lax stick to catch some water balloons in a controlled environment to see if it is even feasible. If it is, then you have a water balloon launcher as well as a device to block or capture water balloons thrown at you.

If you try the lax stick, attach a small plastic bag to the back of the net. that will keep you from getting wet if the balloon pops, while also allowing you to *try* to block shots from water guns.
