Hmm...cool idea. Questions:

Is it going to be mobile? If it isn't, then that's going to be easy to avoid.
What kind of gun is it going to use? A homemade or a stock?
Will it have the advantage of using a hose or will it use a water pump?

I guess that's it for now, until you get more info. I'm really into robotics and stuff, so it'd be cool to see results.

I'll be sure to tell Auth about this, as he is very interested in projects like this. Good luck, and keep us posted.

I've seen something similar sold as a cat deterrent. It's basically a PIR sensor that when it detects something, sprays some water. Not entirely sure of the details.

Ben posted a link here. It wasn't a very powerful one, though. Hopefully you'll have better luck/loftier goals!

A pretty good idea (although a bit impractical effort-wise) would be to have a guy access the sprinklers and activate them when appropriate. Cheap, but I've used this for several water wars. Unfortunately, I don't have a video or a link to show ...
