What size do you typically use? What's the cost?

3/4", price varies, usually around $5.50-6.00, socket.

You can get check valves in whatever configuration you want. I've used threaded, socket, and barbed ones. You can get them with instant tube fittings, flange fittings, anything really.

The PVC ones I get usually are about $7 and can be either threaded or socket. The smaller barbed ones I mentioned in the THR thread were $3.38.

Remember also that there are two major types of check valves: spring and swing. We typically use spring check valves, the ones that close using a spring. Swing check valves are similar, but close using gravity, prohibiting them from working at certain angles. From my experiences with swing check valves, I recommend that you only use spring check valves--swing checks aren't worth the extra effort.
