To determine pump length, put one hand where the handle of the water gun will be and put your other hand as far away as you can where you still feel comfortable. Measure the difference. For me, this is about 3 feet from what I remember. Normally I use 12 inch pumps but I've been considering using something like 16 or 18 inch pumps to reduce the number of pumps. It'll be really long but I think I can handle it.

One thing to remember is that largely the number of pumps doesn't make a difference in energy expended. I'm sure it'll change how you pump especially if you make the pump very long or very short, but if you disregard that, friction, and some other things and model energy expended to build up a certain pressure, it'll be constant in a water gun regardless of the pump length or diameter. Something to think about.

I think I gave some stats from my first APH in the guide (I'm going to bed so I'm not going to check now). If not then check out the forum for some. I think Killer 7 reported some stats recently too.

ok so it just matters on how comfortable it is for me to pump a certain length pump.
I'm basically just scraping all this info together because at the moment I don't have any money to buy the fittings to make the thing. I need to get a job for the summer so I can get money to build this and buy some other things I've been wanting. (maybe I'll buy another water gun, my first in # years. I have no clue, not counting the max-d 3k's I bought/returned last year. Sad excuse for a Super Soaker)

For pump length, I prefer 12". That length makes the pump about half the length of the gun if you're shooting for a 24" gun, but unfortunately rules out a tracked pump. Also, remember to use 1/2" schedule 40 PVC for your pump tube, as larger diameters greatly increase the forces involved when pumping. Read this article for more info on that front.
