It's a shame you never got 1000, wetmonkey442. You shouldn't need a certain amount to show that you, Ben, and Duxburian have as much dedication as anybody else.

EDIT: Hey Duxburian, I didn't know you had 786 posts at iSoaker.com Forums! You're actually getting close--maybe you'll have 1,000 there by the end of the year.

To tell you the truth, If the post is extremely long, I don't usually bother reading it.

Edit: It seems that I am coming up on my 5000th post of my posts at all three big forums (4367 + 168 + 442). Neat that I've posted that much, but 88% of those posts are here so I'll need to spread them out some more. Of course, you can only expect one to post more at their own forum.

Even with posting more at my own forum, somehow I've managed to come up with 1021 + 1611 + 786 = 3418. That's pretty darn even, especially considering the time without SM in most of 2004 and with few [under 300] posts at the ISCF until 2005. This also does not count my 400 something posts at the original Waterbridge Forum or any of the other smaller ones.

I have heard of people being "scared" of long posts--especially redundant and technical ones--but they are fine if they are well done.

It's really the content that counts.

Long posts are usually more worth reading - it's a vicious circle.

I think the best measure would be (if people used it more) the reputation system.

Observation: I've been here a little longer than 2 months and have more than 300+ posts - at that rate, in about 5 months from now, I will have breached the 1000 post limit...

Ben, that's two votes for better broadcasting of the reputation system. Of course, though I doubt it will happen, two people could continue to give each other positive comments...

Maybe we don't need any such system after all. If you've been posting at (or even viewing) SSC, then you should know who is important and who isn't. At least, I think I know all the really important contributors--but I won't post my list for fearing of offending others.

Being the poll lover that I am, I suggest we start a poll to determine the best method to show importance in the SSC community.

I'm not scared of them, I just don't see the point in reading them. It's like talking to guy who won't (and I'm too lazy to add the apostrophe!) shut up. I don't want to hear your life story in a post, not that every long post is bad. But I'm sure many of them could be summed up in shorter ones.

Yes content counts. But having 200 really long posts can have the same amount of content as 600 short ones. Length really has nothing to do with it.

Edit: and that word filter is obnoxious.

What's your point about post length vs. post number? It's the same either way. However, I agree that it seems more organized when people use multiple posts to separate ideas.

There are times when I just want to read a quality post, even if it is long; but usually I just feel like getting the main ideas of various posts because of time.

I have been pointing out the word filter thing for a while...

SilentGuy, are you gonna die of you don't post enough? 15.08 posts per day! You're on a posting spree!

The word filter is kind of annoying, but that's the point, it's fun. I would hate it if Ben removed it. In fact, I wouldn't mind him adding some more filtering, like changing all those single, lowercase i's posted by n00bs to something more fitting.

Actually, I knew that was the name of his first forum. I meant the Invision board he made later on, which I've just remembered was called the High Command.

I think that a lower case I filter would be nice, but I don't know if the forum controls will allow case specific changes.

However, the "s p ?" filter will need changing to permit the posting of asp links.

No, we have too many filters. In addition, the annoying replacements are littered throughout the sub-par posts because they are the ones that haven't been spell-checked, etc. The filter just makes them even more annoying.

As for the lowercase "I," I keep on telling newbies to stop, and you guys should too. Don't they realize that this is a high-quality site with little litter? Nobody listens! Of course, I'm not complaining...

I do my best, but we don't want to lose members - just keep on being subtle - eventually, they will start to come round.

The ones that don't come round are unlikely to be valuable members, and will probably disappear anyway after a week/post or two.

I have seen single post users. Many people just use the forum, they don't hang around to contribute, and truthfully when they do hang around to do so, they say the blindingly clear.

You can normally tell these users - they usually turn up, ask a question that has been answered on the main site, and then - probably leave.

With regards to the "i"s I and the other mods could edit the posts, but most mods don't have the time to do that, and anyway, it's not very polite - it insults their intelligence.

(mind you if they can't be bothered to press the shift key for a fifth of a second occassionally, then they haven't really got much intelligence to insult)

I like your point about the "unimportance" of users with poor spelling and grammar. Their threads will disappear forever as newer, more useful threads drown them out.

I'm quite serious - the users which don't invest much effort into typing their posts don't stay as long, and say less valuable things/shorter posts.

However, I'm not one to chase away n00bs - I was a n00b once (and if you dig up old topics, you can see that Ben was too... [second smily to date]) and n00bs will eventually become experts...

I had done some modifications, but I did know my place - I was the newcomer, and didn't want to make enemies that early on...
