Yeah I found a few nasty Dialers and DataMiners... SAD Got rid of most of the spyware and malware, but not all of it. I need to update Norton asap, run in /msconfig/safeboot, and delete the dialers, they are a real pain. as for keyloggers, none of the sort, although my last computer had a ton of em.

I found out today that I have a virus called s... something. Basically I'm unable to shut down, and when I press ctrl-alt-delete the task bar shows no programs working. This has got to be the most annoying virus I have ever seen. So I have to resort to unplugging, repluging if nothing is working. Also some times right clicking doesn't work. I hate computer virus's!

Aaahh, you mean Sasser? That one is quite annoying, a few people in my dad's work got that, it's a networking virus, I crack down on it by buying a router and locking all the ports.

You press C-A-D and theres noting in the programs? Since yor on XP, it seems, try the Processes tab. Sort by memory usage and possibly CPU. Then, rampage, except explorer (Win Frontend), Taskmgr or something of the life (the program your using), Svchost (Actually might be a good idea if fter you kill noncritical, it doesn't shutdown, as it goes in through a aux account and forces a ful system kill). Aside from that, anything else system critical is protected. Go on a killing spree. Also, run msconfig in the run dialog and kill anything you Don't know from Startup. Thats a good way to blow out. Least what Ive done on my own a few times.

The thing that a lot of people don't get about trojans is that THEY DO NOT INSTALL THEMSELVES AND THEY DO NOT ACTIVATE THEMSELVES, YOU HAVE TO DO IT ALL BY YOURSELF. no offence to anyone but PEBKAC (Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair). I mean to get a trojan you have to first install it (it does not do this automatically) and then actually, physically click on it. The only Malware that installs and activates itself are worms and they are not as common or as destructive as a trojans which can be larger because they simply relys on human stupidity to work. If people just stopped clicking .exe files in emails the total amount of spam on the net would decrease (no more hyjacked computers sending messages) and it would save tech support people a lot of trouble and stress.

Anyways I have cooled off a little bit, I was a little steamed after having to fix my moms computer, my sisters computer and a friend of mines computer because they all clicked some .exe file in an email and installed it thinking that it was a fix from microsoft. (I HATE STUPID PEOPLE) in fact the only person who really listened to my security advice was my girlfriend.

my basic advice:
get a firewall, get a virus checker+update weekly or more often, and finally use common sense

EDIT: spelling

Today it did thr C + A + D and clicked the processes tab. HOLY MOLY! Theres tons of stuff running that I didn't even know about! one that bugs me is ccApp and the lsass ones. Sometimes when I log out of my account, the ccApp needs to be forced shutdown. Nothing bad has ever happened with these though (no problems with mouse, no files altered or deleted, etc, etc). Norton Anti virus never picked these up as viruses. I DO have that Svchost thingy, so should I kill it? By the way, my account is NOT the admin on the comp. So hyper, the Svchost is fatal? ok. I'll try a full system flush later.

look, get an antivirus client and a spyware checker (ad-aware or spybot S&D) and do complete scans with both. If that doesn't fix it then you can go into DOS and disble specific startup actions so that if you know what you are doing you can keep the viruses from running at system startup (if you don't know what you are doing DO NOT DO THIS) that will mean that they are still installed but will not start up with the computer. This will allow you to run full scans and delete them all. If you are not used to using DOS don't even try, the first time I did that I accidentally stopped explorer from starting up which was a bit of a problem (not that I cared, it was my old windows 98 box, I just stuck fedora on it)

EDIT: what I mean by if this doesn't work is that some viruses stop the antivirus program from scanning

I found out my virus wasn't Cydoor, It was the "CoolWebSearch" trojan, quite annoying after it hijacked our browser.

that doesn't work with most viruses - I can configure subseven to be stealthed against that. SUBSEVEN people, XPBackfire-esquepiest of all premade trojans.

You can pretty much ignore the times on that, I rarely ever have Xfire on when I play. I should, though.
