My laptop

Post by Fredcompany » Tue Jul 13, 2010 6:48 pm

It seems my Dell mini 10v has killed itself.
I had it dual booted with Linux Ubuntu and XP, and first GRUB stooped working, then it erased the hard drive.

Luckily it's soon be reborn as a quad booted netbook!
Snow leopard, Tiny7, Ubuntu and Peppermint (a variation of Mint) with 40GB each!

I'm not sure a flat 40GB each is the best idea. You'd probably be better with a seperate partition for your data, and then more like 15-25 GB for each OS.

Yeah, but I might give the smaller OS's less space, because they generally require less room.

The snow leopard install USB didn't seem to work, and my friend couldn't bring in the tiny7 USB, so at the moment it's just ubuntu and peppermint.

I'll probably leave the ubuntu partition as 40GB but reduce the peppermint one to at most 20GB, so I have more space for mac and windows.

In fact, I might not install snow leopard at all, because you have to format the whole hard drive with the GUID partition table for it to work. I wonder if Linux can do that...

I think Linux supports GUID partition tables, but I can't imagine retaining your data during the transition being easy.

I've never been a fan of multi-booting for this exact reason; I'm too afraid that the bootloader will get hungry. But provided you can stay familiar with all four installs at once, go for it!

peppermint looks pretty classy. Have you used it before? How is it?

peppermint is pretty cool.
It's the fastest OS i've tried, and it can run 4 desktops on an atom processor (just about).
Unfortunately snow leopard stopped GRUB working, but I don't mind, because OS X is awesome. I still have peppermint on my hard drive just in case.

Give damn small linux a try. You only need 50 mb to install it, and it works well for quick booting. I currently have mine booting on a 4 gig flash drive.

Size wasn't the problem.
I've got peppermint on my hard drive, but Snow Leopard made the GRUB bootloader stop working.
I might give damn small a try on one of my old desktops though

Good, because DSL can run basically anything with a processor and 32 mb of ram.

But back on topic, how are the installs going? Has everything cooperated, or have you needed to try different partitions.

To be honest I was never a huge fan of DSL. Yes, it's small and light, but it never seemed to work very well for me. I will admit, there's very little that will rival its low system requirements. But if you have a little more power, I'd suggest Vector Linux Light, with a minimum requirement of 64MB though 128 would be better. If you have 256 MB, Lubuntu could be a good option.

Well I'm very happy with snow leopard on my netbook, and putting a linux distro on a PC would just be for fun (I already have 2 other PCs in my house).

Vectorlinux looks pretty nice...
I'll probably end up with several linux distros in different partitions (4 at the most)
Although I could see how many I could put on, as I'm not actually going to use this old PC much...

I now have a new computer!

It has 768MB of RAM, a 2.4GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, and will soon have an OK graphics card and a DVD drive.

Basically it has just above the minimum requirements for COD 4, so soon I'll be able to play CoD 4 at home, instead of having to go round my friend's house!

No screen yet though

I'll keep you posted

I'm buying a monitor from a friend for £10

At 14" it's not great, but it'll do.
