CPS 2000 < 3000 backpack

Post by 00iceman » Thu Apr 29, 2010 5:52 pm

Greetings. 1st post in sscentral forums, glad to be here. I did a quick look through all the old posts and read all the backpack posts. Good posts, but wanted to throw out my particular situation and get some feedback.

Question 1:
I have a CPS 2000 (obviously my favorite, and prized possession). I have a CPS 3000 (currently broken, but will be posting in the repair forum for that.) I would like to use the 3000 backpack with my 2000. I have an extra CPS 2000 reservoir cap so that I can keep one undamaged. Is there a clean way to mod the cap to be able to receive the 3000 backpack nozzle?

Question 2:
Do you think gravity will be enough to effectively use the backpack with my 2000? If I understand the CPS technology correctly, there is no vacuum or anything that would be effectively "pulling" the water from the backpack.

Thanks for your time!

There will be some vacuum. Water is pumped out of the reservoir into the CPS chamber. If the reservoir were sealed, that would lower pressure. Stock, the reservoir cap contains a check valve, usually a simple rubber one, to let air in but stop water flowing out if the blaster is inverted.

The CPS 3000's backpack is soft, so you could aid flow by squeezing it.

To make the connection, one option is to forget about the cap and use a rubber bung, with tubing from the backpack inserted through it. Not the most robust solution though.

Perhaps the 'ideal' mod would be to open up the CPS 2000 and connect the backpack's tube to the pump intake, bypassing the reservoir altogether. That makes the blaster lighter and easier to handle. But it also likely involves irreversibly hacking up your CPS 2000 - probably something you DON'T want to do. (If you wanted to be really fancy, you could perhaps put in a 3-way ball valve, allowing to switch between the backpack and onboard reservoirs).

Why would it require an irreversible damage? I'm looking at my 2000 right now and it looks like you could probably pop it apart to do maintenance, and the reservoir usually pops off with just 3 screws and a little wiggling is there a glued nozzle cap?.... Connecting the actual tube into the intake though, that I'm not sure about. I'd advise some kind of adapter.

I was thinking you would have to actually get inside the reservoir to do the 'direct connection' to the backpack tube, which would mean sawing through it since the reservoir is one piece of plastic. But if it's possible to pop the whole reservoir off and detach it from the internal, it wouldn't be so bad.

You can easily detatch the reservoir (as almost all reservoirs for nearly every blaster ever produced are attached via O-ring), but it will be difficult to connect that part to the backpack. You will need to find a tube with an OD that's just right to squeeze into the pipe that usually holds the O-ring. You may also be able to attach an O-ring to a tube (that doesn't necessarily fit into the pipe) and use that O-ring to seal, though this may not be really reliable.

Some blasters use vinyl tubes to feed from the reservoir which makes it much easier to attach a backpack to. All you have to do is cut the tube out and fit the backpack's tube so that they fit snuggly over each other and seal. If you need to undo this, you can splice the cut tube part (that connects to the reservoir's opening) where it was originally cut by fitting a short tube inside or a larger tube around the two tubes to be spliced.

I don't think what I just said will make any sense but oh well.

I think what you were suggesting was some kind of separate adapter, an extra piece of home made piping that will fit and lock onto both the backpack tube and the intake for the 2000. That way the adapter can be mangled all you want, but you dont have to hurt the 2000's intake or the 3000's backpack.
