lost nozzle help (external on xp 105)

Post by VAJMH » Sun Oct 11, 2009 5:17 am

So I just bought an XP 105 only to discover its stuck on riot blast with no sign of the original nozzle. Being as this is a classic soaker I need to keep it as close to original as possible. I'd be willing to
A: Steal the nozzle from my XP70 somehow and then rebuild that one
B: Rebuild the nozzle and do a damn good job of it.

do you guys have any ideas for either? the screw off nozzle cap is all thats missing, the rest of the weapon is fine. I imagine this is a pretty common problem with the riot blast guns, right? I wonder if I could mod it using an aperture valve, one that you screw in or out to increase the flow?

You'll have to try something like this but as a repair instead of a modification: http://www.sscentral.org/mods/multi-nozzle.html

This is your idea B.

You could definitely attach a valve that can be continuously adjusted, however, you'll probably find that such a valve's use is rather limited. A single normal nozzle should get slightly better range for the same flow rate as the proposed valve.

Ah thanks, I had been looking in repairs and not mods. I think I might try doing that to my XP 70 and then applying the 70's nozzle to the 105. By the way, I used to be up in Towson all the time and swim at the college park pool when I was a kid. Its a shame I didnt ever go up there armed or we might have had a battle sometime in our past!

I would just make a nozzle selector outside of the stock selector. Then you could drill your own endcaps. This would make the gun and barrel longer (which may not be what you want). Or you could try making selector caps with your own threads (hard!!).

I rebuilt the nozzle completely just now, it was a remarkably quick repair. The nozzle on the xp 105 of course comes off to enable riot blast. This repair permanently disables riot blast, but is still worth it in my opinion. Here's what I did:

First I cleaned the gun up. Its pretty badly scuffed and I'm planning to redo the paint soon.
Next I examined the opening for the nozzle. I could see the black plastic with a metal pin through it so I knew that was the aperture which is pulled back to fire. That was a concern because if I glued that shut the gun was junk.

I started out with a pen, figuring to get the basic nozzle and then build around that. I used the body of a bic or papermate pen and found that the diameter of the pen was roughly equal to that of the aperture. I then found the nozzle from a piece of crap squirt pistol I bought at Walmart for some unknown reason which was the exact size of the mouning for the nozzle on the 105. Bright side? The thing was orange. Supersoaker orange. It's the kind you fill in the back and squeeze the trigger to shoot, size of your hand just about. But the front of the pistol was IDENTICAL to the detachable nozzle of the xp 105. I cut it off just at the trigger guard. This left me with about 3/4 an inch of orange plastic, which would just barely go into the hole but not touch the aperture.

I tested and, success! The papermate pen I'd cut fit into the hole at the front of the orange section I cut out of the pistol. But I needed to enlarge the nozzle on the pistol as it wasnt even 1x. Research at Isoaker told me that the nozzle on the 105 is 2.5 x or so. So I found another supersoaker, my trusty 310 and found that its largest nozzle was 2.5 so I sized that and then got a nail that just perfectly fit into it.

Holding the nail with pliers I heated it and then slowly inserted it into the nozzle of the orange squirt toy. It melted the plastic perfectly, leaving just a little excess which I quickly cut away. Unfortuantely it also poked out the tube leading to the squirt gun's nozzle, I took the tapered back of a papermate pen and fitted it inside the body of a bic pen. To the end of the papermate I added a piece of the tubing from the squirt toy. The result was that I had a long wide tube with a smaller tube in the middle, and on one side of the smaller tube a tiny tube coming out of it. The tiny tube reached to the end of the large one, but no further.

The side without the tiny tube was wrapped in a layer of scotch tape with some of the tape hanging off the end . I cut this tape in four spots and splayed it back so I had a circle with four tabs coming off it perpendicularly. (like a maltese cross with a circle in the middle. The tabs were very small and flimsy, but would ensure that no hot glue got to the aperture.

I positioned the taped end over the aperture with the trigger in the closed position. I held it still and positioned the orange portion overtop. It didnt quite fit flush so I sawed a bit off the end of the large tube and then redid the tape thing. I fitted the tube over the aperture again and since it was now the right length I filled around it with a bead of hot glue, pressing gently to hold it in place, but not too hard so as to not push the aperture in.

When this had dried I had a tube coming out of my gun about 1/3 of an inch. That was the hard part, or so I thought. With that done I dabbed some glue into the orange nozzle cover and then put fresh glue around the tube and gently pressed the orange nozzle cover in. It sunk into the glue and the tube poked just perfectly snug into the end of the nozzle. I let it dry and decided to test it.

It pulled to the left at first, but I wiggled a nail around inside and pulled the entire contraption firmly right. I test fired a few more times, dug off a bit of debris from the gluing and drilling, and then finally it fired a straight shot. The power on the gun and distance isnt as great as some modern blasters, but its still very nice, and it looks exactly as it should.

You did a lot of work for this. I'd like to see some pictures of this. It works really well, right. So did you make a nozzle selector, I can't tell?

Anyway, cool!

I'll try to get sone pics sometime, definately by spring when I'll be selling it. I didnt add a nozzle selector as my stated goal was to keep it looking very close to the way it should. The 105 has a single 2x - 2.5x nozzle and so does mine.
