Rubber Band Colosus?

Post by martianshark » Fri Feb 26, 2010 5:48 am

I have an idea for a new collosus that's way easier to do if it works. You just slip lots of rubber bands onto the rubber bladder. Wouldn't that work

they dont expand evenly and uniformly so its not very reasonable to do it that way. and you'd need alot of rubber bands

People have done that before. It does work, but it's really tedious, and you have to layer them on reasonably even. Bike tubes and LRT are easier.

Yeah, it really won't work too well.

If you can't get LRT and don't like bike tubes, I've heard people have had success with cylindrical balloons (like modelling balloons).

Aren't modeling balloons a little weak?

Individually they're thin. You need to layer a lot, like you do for a K-mod. I don't think they're 'weak' in the sense of breaking easily - think of how they have to be twisted up for the models!

Rubber Band Colosus isn't that worth it. It works, but the problem is that you'll need a few hundred bands for any large bladder (MXL you'll need like 350). It's so much easier to use bike tubes or LRT. Any tube that expands works, and rubber bands can, but you have to place them around evenly in lines. Its very difficult to do, and very tedious.

Why do you have to place them evenly? Wouldn't putting them on in any random way still increase the pressure? And I have plenty of rubber bands.

If you don't put them on evenly, only one spot will inflate.

But if you put enough on, wouldn't it be roughly the same everywhere?

It is mainly the problem that randomly putting rubber bands on will make the CPS chamber expand unevenly. That will cause long term problems with the weakend areas, possibly bursting the chamber.

Not necessarily.

If it's roughly the same everywhere, it's even. I don't understand the question. :p

@Ben: He is asking if he places tons of rubber bands over the CPS chamber, will it be the same thing as another CPS tube layered over it. @Martinshark: I don't understand what you don't understand about what Ben doesn't understand about the question. :D
