Need help understanding pumps!
I'm new here and would like to understand a little more about the whole pump deal thing-a-roo. Any help would be great.

Okay, I'll pretty much do a ton of linking:
the SSC pumps article
m15399's pumps article
momx3's (another river gunner) recent questions thread
And if you want to look at some more advanced designs, but with enhanced functionality:
two-stroke pump
multi-stage pump
AMDAthlon's ambitious theoretical combination
Beyond that, if you still don't understand it, maybe you're trying to figure out how the water flows through the soaker.

SSC APH article, though probably not that helpful
The check valve configuration is all-important when using the pump. Just remember the water must go Reservoir -> first check valve -> pump -> second check valve -> PCs -> trigger valve -> nozzle
You should get the general idea from this. If you have any more specific questions or a clarification of what you don't understand, well then, we're always listening.
