Supercannon 2 piston

Post by mysterio » Sun Jul 18, 2010 9:43 pm

hey, does anyone know whether or not the length of a piston chamber like the supercannon 2's would affect its performance? i.e. make it harder to pump?
more info on what im planning to build at http://forums.sscentral.org/t6236/

Length will only affect shot time from a given nozzle.
It will take LONGER to pressurise a larger chamber, but the required pumping force for a given pump isn't affected by length.

another question, does anyone know whether or not the width of the piston chamber matters? i remember reading somewhere it makes it easier to pump. also, is the supercannon 2 piston hard to move, (im directing that part of the question at Ben/Drenchenator)

A larger diameter pressure chamber should permit higher performance, provided it can stand the same pressures. To actually get higher performance would require a larger diameter outlet, valve, and nozzle - the larger diameter PC is unlikely to do much for power by itself.

ok. thanks!

EDIT: but would it be easier to pump? if it had same volume, just higher diameter

Umm, why would you increase the diameter but keep the pump volume the same? The point of a bigger diameter pump is to pressurize in fewer strokes.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.
Quack damn you.

i meant that as in if i changed only the pistons diameter, would it be easier to pump?

You would have a shorter pump, and the force in the area would be spread out over a larger surface area, so technically yes, but the check valves prevent a major build-up of pressure anyway.

I think people are getting confused as to which piston you're talking about, mysterio. The pump's diameter does matter - larger diameter makes it faster but harder to pump. Meanwhile, the pressure chamber's diameter does not significantly affect performance, how easy it is to pump, etc., although it will obviously have an effect on the volume!
