I was on the high school FIRST team, but as animation, not anything important like programming/engineering. Some friends are very well into it though; not surprisingly the ones who are persuing engineering degrees.

Only stuff I've done is a bit with Mindstorms. The most advanced thing I ever had was a mock "Mars rover" that had to stop when it reached a solid end wall, but not when it pushed a "rock" - represented by a potato - out of the way. Pressure sensor on a springy bit at the front and program the thing to stop only when it stays depressed for an extended period.
I work on Windows. My toolbox is Linux.

I'm a little interested in basic robotics. I've wanted to get a Mindstorms NXT 2.0, but it's too expensive.

Well, battlebots is a very consuming experience, and generally expensive. I started to research the cost of a robot with my science club, and we found that they start at about $500 and go up. You might want to try FIRST, as that is a great experience and is extremely informative.
I reject your reality and substitute my own.
Quack damn you.
