Monster '01 QFD Leak

Post by Major McMan » Sun Jul 12, 2009 2:12 am

My Monster has had an annoying leak for quite some time, so tonight I decide to do something about it. I took it apart, pumped it, and saw the leak was coming from three small holes on the QFD. I told my stepdad about it, and he suggested that I use superglue to seal it up. However, I am weary of doing this, due to what I heard about glue not being too effective. Any suggestions?

Welcome back. :)

Glue doesn't always work, but there really aren't any other options here. For the record, epoxy seems to work well for plugging up small holes, but glue alone doesn't work well when you need to provided structural support. Glue is a good bet here.

I'd follow the steps outlined in this article. You can use a toothpick to poke the glue into the holes (although that depends on the size of the leak, which I don't know). Let it set, give it a shot and tell us how it went. :)

The size of the leak is very small, three small cracks to be precise. It drained water out of my pressure chamber pretty quickly, though. :)

I'll seal it up tommorow, and tell you guys how it went. Thanks for your input!

The crack was to small to fit the glue into, so I had to put the glue on top of the crack. I couldn't fit the glue bottle into the QFD, so I was unable to get the glue on the other side of the crack as the guide said.

After the glue set, I put the gun back together and tested it- the gun worked just fine, with absolutely no leaks. :D

Thanks again for your help, SilentGuy.

Getting the glue into the other side of the crack is difficult, but the reasoning makes sense: on the pressurized side, it acts as a plug, because more pressure could wedge it in deeper rather than pop it out. Of course, it's impossible to do in most cases.

Anyway, I'm glad to hear everything went well. What type of glue did you use? I ask because it sounds like you didn't have to wait to long.

I used Loctite Ultra Gel super glue. I didn't keep track of the time it took to try, but I would say it took 45 minutes to an hour.
