New Idea

Post by XxXxX » Thu Apr 23, 2009 11:04 pm

I haven't been here since Science Fair in November, but now its going on May and I need a weapon for the beach and my backyard. I have changed over my old plans to make a turret/stationary pump gun for Fair, but now a rifle type of gun might work better. I might need a couple of ideas on how to proceed, but now most of the compiling of parts makes sense. Sealing a wall between a wider and slightly longer piece of PVC and capping on one end, drilling a small handle for grip, and and outlet tube between pressure tank and resevoir were which pump and check valve is properly placed out, from there I would drill enough to fit a nozzle into the other cap and place in a ball valve in between and drill in a releasing handle. Might be a bunch of jibberish, but this is how I would like to describe the plans for my first gun.

Welcome back.

It sounds like you want a large PVC pipe encasing the entire water gun, except for the backpack...is that right?

No, I thought of a converged pressure tank and resevoir, but sealed in the middle connected by the pump through a few PVC connections. I can't really paste the model here.

I, too, am not really clear about the design you have in mind. If you can sketch/draw your idea and attach an image to a reply, it'd likely help clarify what you're proposing to do.

I tried to make it as good as possible. If you have questions, I am here. Its very unclear and innacurate, but the best for now.

So what you basically want is one piece of pipe, with a barrier around half-way, and use one side as a reservoir and the other as a PC?

Thing is, air-based pressure chambers need to have the outlet at the bottom. Air floats on water.

Also, you won't be able to put a 'wall' in a pipe that would reliably hold pressure.

Thanks for the tip. I might use my brain and use two barrels or something.

A wall is possible if you use cup seals like the ones used in Supercannon II.

The tube encasing the pump needs to be longer - otherwise you won't be able to contract the pump all the way.

SCII's piston isn't required to hold any pressure though. It's watertight and airtight, but the pressure is allowed to equalise.

Yes, the cups will create a seal, but you'll need an additional mechanism to hold the "wall" in place. Another option is to use a coupler to connect two pieces of pipe, but cement a PVC separator inside.

A somewhat easy way to accomplish this idea:
Look for PVC "test plugs" which are plastic caps that go on the inside of a pipe, and put one in each side, then join the 2 pipes with a coupler. That way there won't be any heating and flattening of a piece of PVC pipe necessary. And is also fairly cheap

Ah, so there is a name for that fitting. Thanks - that's exactly what I was thinking about.

For oddly shaped pressure chambers, you can also use an intake tube like the super soaker does. However, it inhibits performance and makes it harder to dry out the gun, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.

Thanks for the tips, when school ends in two weeks, I'll shop keeping this stuff in mind.

You could also use a bladder for a horizontal tank like the SuperCps or the DR-3 but the piston cups work well. I made a 3" piston gun on Thursday it works great but I made mine 4' long you probably want something shorter and I suggest you use a small nozzle or you will be empty in a matter of seconds.
