O-ring seal design guide

Post by SSCBen » Mon Jan 12, 2009 3:17 am

I stumbled across a design guide for O-rings. Reading a bit of the design guide has been enlightening. I would highly suggest those interested in working with O-rings and other seals read this guide to learn the correct way to use O-rings.

From http://www.applerubber.com/sdg/guide2/rules/index.cfm:
6. For reciprocating seals passing O-rings over ports is not recommended. Nibbling and premature wear and seal failure will result.
Ouch. There go all the plans for a Nerf dart magazine. :p

Of course, the best solution is just to do it anyway and replace the seals when they wear out. I guess it's common sense though.

Nice find.

Replacing the seals is a reasonable solution. O-rings usually come in bulk... why not use them?

I've read the majority of this guide so when I return to college I'll investigate some of the references. This guide is a good introduction but it is lacking in some details. That and some of the charts are too small to be legible.
