Is There a Max-D Mod?

Post by martianshark » Wed Mar 03, 2010 4:02 am

Is there some sort of modification you can do to reenforce Max-D system so that it doesn't break as easily?

There are generally two solutions.

1. You can replace the spring with a better one from the hardware store; one that is stainless steel but otherwise is roughly the same spring. Certain rubber bands may also work but most will not. Reinforcing the plastic parts would probably help too.

2. Remove the Max-D system and use a series of rubber band wrappings or spring with something to hold onto in order to operate the valve. A Flash Flood repair posted earlier uses rubber bands without the Max-D system but I don't have time to look it up right now.

How do you reenforce the plastic parts? There should be a guide on this here.

I'd say use plumber's epoxy and just coat over the plastic. Just don't go over anything that has to move and will restrict, let's say the firing valve.

I would just redo the trigger system, but I only suggest doing this on the Max-D 6000 (the only one that A. has enough room, and B. worth it). All the little 234ks do not have enough room and the 5k stinks and has barely enough room.

Reinforcement is pretty tricky for the weak areas. For the stronger areas, there's not much point to it. Coating just epoxy may not actually do much, but I guess you really don't know until a crack starts to form; that's when you coat it with epoxy and a metal strip if possible. If not, there will have to be another method. (such as drilling a hole and putting a screw in for one of those plastic nubs that may break off)

It should unlikely be an issue though, so I wouldn't worry about it until it's a problem since it can't be known percisely ahead of time anyways.

Plumbers epoxy? wouldn't that just make the water gun completely stuck? Anyway, I mostly meant the main trigger problem with Max-D water guns.

Generally the guns are cheap enough that you can just buy a new pair for what it costs to repair them. Two Max-D 3000's sell for $10 where I live, and it is just $8 for Max-D 2000's.

I was refering to the plastic parts that may snap off easily; using epoxy/putty for bonding plastic may help keep them in place longer but as I said, it may be tricky or impossible to do in some situations.

I doubt a spring that small costs that much, and with a spring replacement, you know it's not just going to break after another one or two years. (That is, the spring. The plastic is another issue but generally it seems less likely to break than the spring)

In the UK at least, I'd struggle to find Max-D's, and indeed might have trouble finding anything around the size of a MD2k/3k that's decent.
I work on Windows. My toolbox is Linux.

The WW Barracuda and Sting Ray are both excellent options for small sidearms (better than their Max-D alternatives imo); here in NZ Barracuda twin packs are very common and reasonably priced so you may be able to find some in the UK...

edit: I see from your signature that you already have the Sting Ray, I'd definitely recommend the Barracuda as a bigger/better sidearm (good range/output and still compact)

I personally have not tried any WW sidearms, but I wouldn't be surprised if they are indeed better than the Max-D's. Still, I probably won't pick up any until one of the Max-D sidearms I have breaks and can't be fixed easily.

Not sure if they are still available, but the Firefly is a potent PR gun. The stream is surprisingly powerful, and the blaster is extremely durable.

Does the trigger system in the Flash Flood have the same fault as the Max-D, where in the spring itself actually breaks (not the plastic)?

I still need to open mine up and see what broke.

@Kimura: Yes, the FF uses the Max-D trigger system.

The firefly is still in some stores, just mainly as surplus stock. And for me, Target and Walmart always had Max-d 2000 and 3000 double packs, for $6-10.
