If you want it to be cheap and a little less powerful, use 1/2". If you want a large one like Ben's APH, use 3/4". If you want it to be rediculously small (and if you can find it) use 1/4".

Re: help with aph design
Go through the APH guide and decide for your self:
bigger pipe: more flow, more bulky, generaly more grip.
smaller pipe: more pressure, lighter, less grip (unless you make one).
it depends on what your looking for.

if i used 1/2 inch pvc pipe would the check valves, ball valve, and joints need to have a larger inner diameter

Depends if you can get 1/2 inch PVC fittings where you live.
If you can't find any, use a reducer on either side of a larger fitting

Re: help with aph design
For affecting performance, you only care about what's between the pressure chamber and the nozzle. So the piping and joints linking the two, and the firing valve. The check valves are not part of that path, so they can be smaller.
You also want to pick the right pump diameter . Too big limits the pressures you can reach badly - maximum pressure scales as inverse square to pump diameter. Too small means you have to pump a lot more - number of pumps to fill the PCs to the same level scales with the same inverse square.
For the rest of the gun, you probably want to use small pipe to reduce size, and definitely try to go for small check valves. (Brass check valves are I believe much smaller than PVC ones, but you'd need adapters as well which might remove the advantage.

I work on Windows. My toolbox is Linux.
