How do water guns work?

Post by zuloon » Sun Jun 01, 2008 10:38 pm

I'd like to make my own water gun, but I know I'm not getting anywhere since I have no idea how they work.

Help?

Welcome to the forums, zuloon! :)

We have an article in the physics section about how water guns work, and it also links to the HowStuffWorks guide. Our article currently lacks images so it's a bit of a slow read, but hopefully it gets the basics down.

Then, if you haven't already, read the air pressure homemade tutorial. We also have a bunch of other homemade water gun articles, but they're not so thorough in terms of addressing the building process.

Good luck!

The best way to learn how a water gun works in my opinion is to take one apart. Buy one, take it apart, and try to operate it while open. You'll see valves open, water move, and learn a lot about how they work very fast.

If you're confused about anything specific don't hesitate to ask about it.

Edit: This works best on a pressurized reservoir water gun like the higher end of the Water Warriors and Super Soaker brands.
