Max-D 3000 Nozzle Drill

Post by SEAL » Tue Nov 09, 2010 8:13 pm

This is how it goes.

I brought a ton of soakers off ebay last summer (11 to be precise.), and one of them was a black and orange MD 3000. It never fired that far, shooting only around 20-something feet. The reason for this, as I found out, is that the nozzle is a bit chewed up. It looks like a dog may have been chewing on it. So the nozzle is a little deformed, and there's a little piece of plastic over the nozzle that's ruining the lamintation.

Here is a picture. See the little piece of plastic sticking out over the opening?

So I was thinking about drilling it out for ages, and now that winter's rolling 'round, I think I will actually start doing it.
I think I may turn it into a close-range riot-blaster type thing. Do you have any good bit size recommendations? It's not dangerous to drill like the FF right?

This will be my first blaster modification. The blaster is pretty much useless right now anyway, so I don't really mind if I end up destroying it.

I would look down the nozzle and try to see how big the tubing is; then take a bit a little smaller than that and drill it. I might nozzle drill some of my MD3Ks pretty soon.

Edit: I just did a nozzle drill on one of my Max-D 3000s. I only made it slightly bigger than it normally was, and it has a pretty nice, thick stream. However, even though I did it pretty cleanly, lamination is bad. And you only get about 2-3 shots before you run out. I'm not going to nozzle drill it bigger until I find out exactly how big the tubing is.

What size did you use?

I mainly just want to get rid of that little plastic piece, but I figure while I'm at it, I'll try to give it better output. I will probably use it for a close-quarters blaster, since I already have plenty of sidearm blasters. Which reminds me, I have to get around to fixing my MD 2000.

The lable is worn away, but I think it may have used to say 7/64. Just find something big enough to drill off the plastic piece.

Martianshark is right, do not drill it out too much, just a bit. The more cleaner you can do this, the better the range and stream size will be :)

You may better get only this plastic pice out of there and try to get a clean and straight nozzle. :)

Okay, I'll just get rid of the plastic thing then. But the nozzle is also kind of deformed, so I want to try and straighten it out.

I do have access to a drill press, by the way.

I would actually advise against using a drill press. Drill presses go straight down, and it is hard to balance a water gun to point straight up.

I have a vice that I can use. I definitely would not try to balance it.

I will get to work on it in a little while. It's fairly warm out today, so I can test it when I'm done. I'll also take a few pictures for you guys.

EDIT: Bah, I got delayed. I don't think I'll be able to do it tomorrow either.

Okay, I did it.

I got rid of the plastic piece, and drilled the nozzle back to it's original shape, while also making it a bit bigger. The results were beautiful! It shoots as if it were brand new.

I didn't use a power drill, I actually used this thing that looks like a stick with a drill bit in the end. The nozzle is almost perfectly round from it.

I'm very happy with this! Unfortunately I discovered that the trigger tends to stick, so I'll have to fix that one of these days...

Was your tool powered? Or was it a hand drill?

I'm not exactly sure what it's called, but I guess it looks kind of like a screwdriver with a bit in one end. You can switch different sized drill bits in and out.

And no, it wasn't powered.

Don't drill it too far nor too wide. The Max-D 3000 can't handle much larger nozzles. 2.5mm to 3mm should be good.

Yeah, I mostly just "carved out" the nozzle in order to give it it's normal shape. I'm not sure if I'll drill it out any bigger, but if I do, I'll know what sizes to use. Thanks!
