usable lrt?

Post by Horrid1 » Wed Aug 10, 2011 1:56 am

I bought a dragon drencher water gun today at Walmart for $7 on sale and I figure I can use it on my next build just wanted to ask if anyone has seen these ? It's easy to take apart just for the rubber tube its a pretty good size. How much is a piece of LRT anyway? I forget to look when I go to home depot

Hopefully I can use it for a cps I plan on in the not so distant future

Lowes tends not to carry LRT in usable sizes. This rubber, however, may be decent for smaller nozzles. Like the idea, post updates, let us know how it works out.

Sweet I might have to go back to Walmart and get the few that were left for that price it might be a little cheaper and more convenient way of getting tubing in that size. The package said it will shoot 25 ft. Not sure if that will stay the same once built into a gun.

It doesn't look thick enough to be effective at a large scale, neither is the stuff you find at the Home Depot. You could make a good and potent pistol-sized homemade with it, but anything bigger will leave you disappointed.

It may be layerabler though. This dounds very interesting. Also, just so you guys know, I may have a good source of thick walled LRT. Not going to tell you anything until I confirm it and maybe make a CPH.

@Mr.dude - is there any threads on making a pistol in here ?

I'm going to kick around a few ideas I have in the back of my head since I built my last aph. I will post designs hopefully pretty soon.

The key to making a small homemade is with small pipes and fittings. You may have to order special 1/4 inch tubing and fittings.

The dragon stuff looks somewhat layerable, the tail end looks a little thinner so you could stack the front end onto it. Alright, so I'm seeing stretchier bike tubes with this.
As for the Home Depot stuff, it's a pain in the bumbum to layer, it's doable, but not easy at all. More importantly, its ID is too low for a proper-sized CPH.

I searched for topics about pistols, the only one I could find was from 7 years ago, and all the responses were along the lines of "Or you could go buy one for 99 cents". I think pistols are really cool, personally, but it's true that they're probably not worth it. Anyway, like atvan said, small pipes.

Thanks guys I still might try it out if anything it will be just for practice toward better homemades and I'm thinking of smaller guns for my kids to use as well so small size isn't so bad

I apologize for not coming by earlier. I have been very busy and understandably that affects how often I check my forum.

In Supercannon II, the piston does not exit the nozzle because the pipe reduces in size. The piston is 4 inches in diameter, while the pipe is 1 1/2 inches in diameter. The problem with this design for your purposes is that the large diameter piston is necessary to achieve the high force. This may not be small enough and certainly making would be a big waste of money due to the lack of capacity.

There are a few options here. Limiting yourself to air pressure designs, you essentially have two options: piston or non-piston design. A non-piston design is simpler and cheaper, but can be fired on a limited range of angles and is not as efficient as a piston design. In contrast, the piston design can be fired at any angle and is more efficient.

I would make a small, about 6 inch long piston chamber with a 3 inch piston to make a small pistol water gun. This wouldn't be too large and could be very powerful. You will not have trouble achieving 55 feet of range with this design.

For simplicity, you essentially are limited to using a ball valve as a trigger. One question I often get from spud gunners is "Isn't a ball valve less efficient than a solenoid/etc.?" The answer for water guns is no. In fact, ball valves are perfect performance-wise for water guns due to their high and straight flow. Air pressure spud guns only need a fast opening valve to get high initial flow to push the projectile out at a faster initial speed. That is not necessary in water guns.

Ball valves can take some getting used to though, but once used to them, there is essentially no difference between them and regular triggers.

For nozzles, threaded caps typically are used due to their price. They're not the best for performance, but they're good enough for most purposes. A cone-shaped nozzle is the best. More on this later.

I am leaving for dinner right now and will write more later (I am not done yet)... let us know if you have any more questions. I'll write some more on the 3 inch piston design in my next post.
This is an idea from Ben a while back. It might be very useful for 1 shot situations. Think CTF flag runner. You could carry 2, and pwn noobs. That would be fun. I might make one.

That would be pretty nice I think I will go that route fairly small and semi compact. It comes with a quick connect to fill as is so I'm going to try and incorporate that into the build if possible it may be easier that way as well. Thanks atvan for pulling up the post!
